Once upon a time, a wise and kind king named Raja lived in a lush and vibrant forest. King Raja was not just any king; he ruled over the forest animals with great wisdom and fairness. Every animal in the forest loved and respected him because he always made just decisions and ensured peace and harmony.
One sunny day King Raja overheard the animals discussing a menacing lion named Shera who had invaded their forest. Shera was known for his ferocity and demanded that one animal be sacrificed to him every day as his meal. If the animals dared to defy him he threatened to annihilate them all. The news of Shera’s tyranny spread fear throughout the forest leaving the animals in a state of despair.
The animals were scared and didn’t know what to do. They came to King Raja for advice.
“Don’t worry, my dear friends,” said King Raja. “I will think of a way to solve this problem.”
King Raja thought long and hard. Finally, he devised a plan and called a meeting with all the animals.
“My friends, we will send one animal to Shera each day, but we will do it wisely. Today, I will send our cleverest rabbit, Chatur, to meet Shera,” King Raja announced.
Panchatantra Chatur Rabbit:
A Journey of DiscoveryChatur, the rabbit, was indeed very clever. He nodded and went to meet the lion, Shera.
On his way, Chatur thought about how he could outsmart Shera. He walked slowly, taking his time to think. By the time he reached Shera’s den, it was already late afternoon.
Shera, hungry and angry, roared, “Why are you so late? I will eat you and all the animals in this forest!”
Chatur, without showing any fear, replied, “Mighty Shera, I am late because another lion attacked me on my way here. He claimed to be the true king of this forest and said you are nothing compared to him.”
Shera’s eyes burned with rage. “Another lion? Take me to him! I will show him who the real king is!”
Chatur led Shera to a deep well in the middle of the forest. As they reached the well, Chatur pointed inside and said, “The other lion is hiding down there.”
Shera’s Reflection on the Well
Shera looked into the well and saw his reflection in the water. He thought it was the other lion and roared. His reflection roared back. Enraged, Shera jumped into the well to fight the imaginary lion, but instead, he fell into the water and drowned.
Chatur quickly ran back to the other animals and told them what had happened. The forest erupted in cheers. They praised Chatur for his cleverness and King Raja for his wise decision.
From that day on, the forest was peaceful again. The animals lived happily under the wise and kind rule of King Raja, always remembering the clever rabbit who saved them from the fierce lion.
And so, the forest thrived, full of joy and harmony, thanks to the wisdom of their great king and the cleverness of a brave rabbit.
